Both Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf know that many of our patients desire to have the best possible smile. To that end, our West Side Family Dentistry team offers Porcelain Veneers to allow our patients to obtain their goals of the most beautiful smile possible without the need for orthodontic or major dental work.
Porcelain veneers can help correct the appearance of stained, chipped, crooked, or poorly spaced teeth. If you have any of these issues, porcelain veneers are a great answer to create the beautiful smile you have always wanted.
Veneers are strong, thin shells of acrylic or porcelain, which are bonded to the front of your teeth and create a beautiful, white, fresh new smile in as little as two visits! This wafer-thin porcelain is form-fitted to each individual problem tooth. As strong as one's own teeth, these veneers resist future discoloring and chipping. Only one or two visits are required to have the perfect smile.
If you are interested in getting that smile that you have always wanted, or have questions about improving your smile with porcelain veneers, speak with Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf or one of our West Side Family Dentistry team members today!
before & after
If you are missing some of your teeth, don't worry; Dr. Sundberg or Dr. Beversdorf can help you. Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf know that losing one or more teeth has an unwelcome impact socially and psychologically. That is why Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf want you to understand what crown and bridge treatment can do for you. Crown and bridge work is a permanent method for replacing missing teeth to help you improve your smile and health.
Crown and bridge procedures permanently replace missing and worn tooth structure. Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf utilize very strong, esthetic dental materials to restore teeth to their natural function and beauty. This technology has evolved so that in certain cases, all-ceramic (porcelain) materials are used. These metal-free restorations are not only very strong, but life-like too. Sometimes crowns or bridges are constructed in conjunction with other cosmetic services, such as porcelain laminates, to create an entire new look. No special maintenance is necessary and the restorations generally last for many years.
Crowns
Crowns are covers that fit over your teeth to restore and strengthen them. Some reasons for choosing crowns are to cover discolored or unevenly shaped teeth, to protect weak or decayed teeth, to restore a fractured tooth, to attach a bridge or to strengthen teeth after a root canal treatment.
Crowns can be made of different materials, including acrylic, metal and porcelain. All porcelain crowns are a good choice for front teeth as they look the most natural. For back teeth, metal crowns covered in porcelain, or all-metal crowns are usually used. Back teeth require a stronger material to withstand the forces of chewing.
What are the benefits of crowns from a cosmetic and health point of view? A crown can be utilized to repair a chipped or fractured tooth and is by far the best way to protect a weak or badly decayed tooth. A crown is also a very good way to cover a single or number of teeth that are stained or have become yellow due to tetracyline, coffee, tea, or other harsh staining properties.
Bridges
A bridge is an artificial tooth used to replace one that is missing. It is attached to your neighboring teeth. One of the benefits of using a bridge to replace a missing tooth (or teeth) is how natural it looks and feels. With proper care, bridges can last for years.
A bridge can take the place of a missing tooth. It not only improves the look of your smile, but also contributes to better dental health. Each tooth has its own important role. Some are used for biting or chewing, others give shape to your face. The support that your teeth provide for each other is compromised when one tooth is missing. Before long, evidence of breakdown is noticed in the remaining teeth, the jaw joint and/or the gums. The use of a bridge or 'artificial tooth' can prevent these problems.
If you are missing a tooth, but have sound, healthy teeth on either side of the gap, a bridge may be a good option for you. A bridge is a replacement tooth which is bonded to adjacent teeth. The benefit to you is that you keep the two neighbouring teeth intact, instead of having them filed down for a crown as in traditional crown and bridge work. Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf are interested in helping you receive the least extensive and most appropriate dental treatment possible.
Dr. Sundberg, Dr. Beversdorf and their Mendota team of professionals here at West Side Family Dentistry take great pride in helping all of our patients to have the healthiest most beautiful smile possible. If you have any questions about crowns or bridges, please feel free to speak with Dr. Sundberg, Dr. Beversdorf or one of our West Side Family Dentistry team members today.

first visit
It is extremely important to Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf that you understand exactly what is involved when it comes to the extraction of you or your child’s wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are extracted for two general reasons: either the wisdom teeth have already become impacted, or the wisdom teeth could potentially become problematic if not extracted.
What are impacted wisdom teeth? Wisdom teeth are the third molars, the last teeth to erupt. Impacted wisdom teeth are unable to erupt. They may have grown in at an awkward angle or are blocked by another tooth or even your jawbone. Over time, your impacted tooth could cause problems such as decay, damage to other teeth or pain.
Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17 and 21. However, they may begin causing problems years earlier. There is not always enough room at the back of your jaw for your wisdom teeth, this can lead to inflammation, pain and difficulty opening your jaw.
Potential problems caused by the presence of properly grown-in wisdom teeth include infections caused by food particles easily trapped in the jaw area behind the wisdom teeth where regular brushing and flossing is difficult and ineffective. Such infections may be frequent, and can cause considerable pain and medical danger. Another reason to have a wisdom tooth removed is if the tooth has grown in improperly, causing the tongue to brush up against it.
Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf will always suggest saving a tooth whenever possible. Other than wisdom teeth, you may have other problematic teeth that have decay, have been traumatized or need to be extracted to make room for other crowded teeth.
There are ways to save your original teeth from extraction and we suggest that you speak with Dr. Sundberg or Dr. Beversdorf before you decide which course of action is best for you.
As with all treatment that West Side Family Dentistry provides, Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf will ensure your complete comfort and understanding. A root canal is nothing to be worried about, it is however extremely important in the saving of your tooth!
There is no reason for concern if you require a root canal. Endodontics, also known as root canal therapy, refers to a filling of the root structure of your tooth. This is usually required as a result of trauma to the tooth or significant decay that involves the nerve or pulp of your tooth.
During an endodontic procedure, the tooth is cleaned, filled and restored to its original shape and size. Generally, a crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further problems. This crown will protect your tooth for years to come, and the endodontic treatment allows your tooth to survive.
So do not be concerned if Dr. Sundberg or Dr. Beversdorf communicates that you require a root canal. Root Canal Therapy is quite common and a procedure that Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf have performed on so many occasions.

Partials
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two common types of dentures available; complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are uses when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when their are remaining natural teeth. Partial Dentures are removable and also come in the form of a bridge consisting of replacement teeth, secured to a pink or gum coloured base. These are often connected by a metal framing which purpose is to hold the denture properly and securely in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when there are more than one remaining natural tooth on the upper and lower jaw. Partial Dentures not only fill in the spaces missing teeth create, they prevent other teeth from changing position. This appliance is very natural looking and utilizes internal attachments rather than clasps that attach to crowns.
Whether you're looking to replace your current dentures or are pursuing dentures for the first time, West Side Family Dentistry is at your service in Mendota, IL. Call us today to set up your appointment.
Dental Implants in Mendota, IL
Dr. Sundberg and her team of dental professionals here at West Side Family Dentistry in Mendota, offer dental implants.
Dental implants are designed to provide a secure foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. If you are among the many Americans who suffer from permanent tooth loss, you can eliminate the problems and discomfort caused by poorly fitting dentures or missing teeth. You can begin to discover the joy of eating healthy, speaking clearly, feeling confident and laughing comfortably! With dental implants, you can rediscover the comfort and confidence to enjoy your life. Dental implants are designed to provide you with a natural looking and functioning smile.
Did you know that even the loss of one tooth might result in the tipping, drifting and erupting of neighbouring and opposing teeth? The loss of several teeth can result in the inability to chew and speak effectively. It can also lead to the collapse of your bite causing stress on your jaw joints and facial muscles. This may be a reduction in the vertical dimension of your face resulting in an older facial appearance and noticeable facial lines. Dr. Sundberg and her team of dental professionals consider all these factors when determining how best to achieve dental aesthetics that are in harmony with your physiology.
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is inserted below the gum to anchor an artificial tooth. Dental Implants are a more secure and confident solution to uncomfortable or loose dentures.
Restore Your Smile
Whether your missing tooth is the result of periodontitis, tooth decay, or an injury, West Side Family Dentistry wants to help restore your smile with a beautiful new dental implant that looks and functions just like a real tooth. Let Dr. Sundberg Give Your Child the Gift of a Beautiful Broad, Healthy Smile!
Dr. Sundberg loves kids! And most certainly loves to help them have the straightest, healthiest smiles possible. Dr. Sundberg has been extremely well educated on the benefits of offering early orthodontic care for children.
Give your child the gift of a beautiful, healthy smile! Here at West Side Family Dentistry in Mendota, Dr. Sundberg and the team of dental professionals offers early orthodontic care for children. By treating your child’s problems early, you save money and may prevent the need for more extensive future treatment. Dr. Sundberg can get your child’s smile off to a healthy start by treating your child early! Parents want the best for their children; straight teeth, properly sized jaws, straight profiles and beautiful smiles.
75% of 12-year-olds need orthodontic treatment, yet 90% of a child’s face has already developed by that age! Here at West Side Family Dentistry in Mendota, Dr. Sundberg guides your child’s facial development early with functional appliances. Up to 80% of your child’s treatment can be corrected before the adult teeth are present!
Many children who need orthodontic treatment due to a bad bite have underdeveloped lower jaws. Dr. Sundberg utilizes functional appliances which can reposition the lower jaw forward, improve your child’s profile and correct the bite problem within 7 to 9 months!
Why are functional appliances so important?
Dr. Sundberg utilizes functional appliances which can help correct and can often prevent: Bite problems, underdeveloped jaws, narrow arches, crowded teeth, deep overbites, jaw joint problems, airway problems and thumb-sucking habits.
Many children with narrow jaws, deep overbites or receding lower jaws have unhealthy jaw joints which can cause:
• Headaches and neck pain
• Dizziness and fainting
• Earaches or ringing in the ears
• Clicking and locking jaws, or difficulty opening jaws
Deep overbites and receding lower jaws may cause earaches, stuffiness or ringing in the ears. If infection has been ruled out, functional appliances can eliminate these symptoms effectively.
Mouth breathing can lead to orthodontic problems as well, leading to problems such as poor sleep habits. This can leave children prone to daytime fatigue, an inability to concentrate in school and headaches. Mouth breathing can cause narrow arches and unattractive smiles. By using functional appliances while children are actively growing, Dr. Sundberg and the team here in Mendota can help them achieve a broad, beautiful smile and prevent many issues.
Due to the fact that younger children between the ages of 8 and 11 are often much more cooperative than children between the ages of 12 to 14, the use of functional appliances becomes very smart! As well, early phase one treatment with functional appliances will probably mean that your child will need to wear fixed braces on their adult teeth for less time.
Crowded teeth are caused by narrow arches. Developing the arches at an early age may prevent or eliminate the crowding of permanent teeth and often eliminates the need to remove any adult teeth. Narrow jaws can confine the tongue and interfere with normal speech. Functional appliances help ensure proper growth and greatly enhance your child’s ability to speak normally.
Dr. Sundberg and the dental team’s early use of functional appliances can prevent or eliminate the need for the removal of adult teeth and lengthy use of braces, speech difficulties and crowding.
Early phase one treatment with functional appliances, (ages 5 to 12), should be initiated for habits such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking, a constricted airway due to swollen adenoids or tonsils, mouth breathing or snoring problems, a bad bite or narrow or underdeveloped jaws. Dr. Sundberg suggests that it is critical to correct any functional or jaw problems as soon as they are diagnosed. During phase two, (ages 12 to 14), your child’s teeth are straightened with braces, which usually take about 1½ to 2 years.
A functional appliance may provide your child with improved appearance and speech. Dr. Sundberg takes great pride in helping children to have the healthiest most beautiful smile possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with one of our West Side Family Dentistry team members today.
Here at West Side Family Dentistry Dr. Sundberg, Dr. Beversdorf along with their team of dental professionals, feel that it is very important to make sure that your children have a broad, beautiful, healthy smile. Making sure that your children are healthy is so important, and your child’s oral health is a huge part of their overall health.
As your child grows, Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf are able to recognize at an early stage any problems that will affect the overall function of your child's dental health. Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf pride themselves in creating an environment that is friendly, caring and fun, allowing for a positive dental experience!
If you have any questions about your child’s oral or overall health, please feel free to speak with one of our team members here at West Side Family Dentistry today. Taking great care of your children is incredibly important to Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf.

What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when one’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. Those affected by sleep apnea may stop breathing many times during their sleep which means that the body and brain may not be getting enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea, Obstructive sleep apnea and Central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form, occurs when a person’s throat muscles relax not allowing the body to basically breathe in. Central sleep apnea occurs when one’s brain does not send the correct signals to the muscles that control breathing.
What Are the Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea?
Patients who suffer from sleep apnea could experience many common symptoms. People who experience loud snoring, waking up with a very sore or dry throat, or waking up with a choking or gasping sensation could have this disorder. In addition, sleep apnea has been known to cause morning headaches, restless sleep, and lack of energy during the day. Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf recommend patients with symptoms related to sleep apnea seek care from our team immediately to prevent further health risks.

Over 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, and 20 million suffer from obstructive sleep apnea? Only 93% of women and 82% of men with moderate to severe OSA remain undiagnosed. Take this short questionnaire to determine your risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Treating Sleep Apnea & Snoring?
Treating sleep apnea is extremely important. Left untreated, this disorder could cause stroke or heart failure. Some of the ways to treat sleep apnea include lifestyle changes, continuous positive airway pressure, and a custom made sleep apnea device that can be made for you here at Westport Family Dental.
At West Side Family Dentistry, Dr. Sundberg and Dr. Beversdorf are very happy to answer any questions you may have concerning snoring and sleep apnea.

When the Jaw develops properly, the teeth have room to fall into place and create a nice smile with a healthy bite relationship. The jaw has the opportunity to develop well with proper breathing habits. A healthy airway starts with nasal breathing. This is accomplished with lips sealed and our tongues resting on the roof of our mouth. One of these habits could be compromised by a functional limitation due to anatomy. While catching these early is ideal, there are solutions available regardless of age to increase the quality of life through a better airway.
For patients suffering from airway or sinus issues, advanced technology has allowed for the development of the Tx STUDIO software that allows for the analysis of 3D data to determine and reveal restricted airways. Here at Westside Family Dental, we use this software alongside the i-CAT FLX airway analysis device, that allows us to evaluate airway obstructions and help identify patients with an increased risk of a potential sleep disorder. Through this analysis, we can determine appropriate treatment with exact anatomical measurements and views.
